A dozen reasons to join the
A dozen reasons to join the European Mathematical Society
- The EMS is dedicated to promoting mathematics, both pure and applied,
throughout Europe, both in the EU and outside.
- The EMS has successfully lobbied Brussels to make the European framework
programmes more appropriate for mathematics. The Society has supported the
creation of a European Research Council.
- The EMS has founded a publishing house to publish journals and books at
reasonable prices.
- The Journal of the European Mathematical Society has established itself
among leading mathematical periodicals.
- The EMS publishes a quarterly Newsletter, with news about the Society and
mathematical events, interviews with mathematicians, general interest articles
about mathematics, book reviews, and a conference calendar.
- The EMS promotes the European Congresses of Mathematics.
- The EMS promotes the European Prizes for Mathematics.
- The EMS supports and co-ordinates summer schools for young
mathematicians.
- The EMS runs a series of mathematical weekend meetings, in conjunction
with its member societies.
- The EMS, through its subcommittees, supports mathematicians in Eastern
Europe and in developing countries.
- The EMS works to improve the position of women in mathematics.
- The EMS works to raise public appreciation of mathematics.
The EMS has shown it can be effective in areas beyond the limits of national
mathematical societies. But it needs more individual members, so as to truly
represent European mathematics. It also needs individual members to take part in its
ever-expanding activities, thus contributing to a richer mathematical life in Europe.
Please support the work of the society by joining it as an individual member!
Benefits of membership include:
- The free quarterly Newsletter
- Reduced registration fees for European Congresses and Mathematical
Weekends
- Discounts on journals and books published by the EMS Publishing House
Individual membership doesn't cost much: currently EUR 22 if you are a member of a national
mathematical society in geographical Europe, just enough to cover the costs of producing and posting
the Newsletter and to pay for routine administration. You can join through your national society.

EMS, see http://www.emis.de.
